Let’s Read is an L.A. Works-sponsored program that provides local elementary- and middle school-aged children with a safe, fun atmosphere to improve their reading and writing skills.
We begin each session with a group read, where one of our tutors reads a book aloud.
Then, each of the kids selects his or her own book – we have plenty of great donations! – and reads individually with a tutor. Our volunteers help strengthen our students’ reading comprehension and writing skills. They also help build confidence in our young readers and inspire them to enjoy reading outside of school!
For the second half of each session, everyone gathers for a collaborative group activity. Sometimes we make arts & crafts, put on plays, have special guests, play guessing games, and even write our own books.
Finally, the day concludes with everyone helping to clean up, then enjoying a healthy snack.
Let’s Read will also occasionally take field trips to libraries, museums, and college campuses.
Let’s Read meets in West LA/Brentwood, at the Brentwood Presbyterian Church (12000 San Vicente Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90049). We are on the 2nd floor, classroom 209.
